Road Tripping in an Electric Vehicle
Road trips have been a great American tradition since cars were first made popular in the early 20th century. Though at first a privilege granted only to the wealthy, cars were soon made available for families, who were then able to explore all across the country.
Road tripping is still a popular family vacation today, but Americans have different concerns than they did 100 years ago. The harmful emissions caused by cars are polluting the air and harming our environment, which is why many families and car owners have opted to go the green route by investing in an electric vehicle.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity in the U.S. and around the world. Most EV’s are also very technologically advanced and actually make road trip planning and mapping easier with these capabilities!
It used to be a difficult task if you were planning to take a cross-country road trip in an electric vehicle, as ten years ago the necessary charging stations were few and far between. Today, however, there are an abundance of different charging stations across the country, if you know where to look.
Each electric vehicle requires a different type of charging station in order to power up the battery. Some types of charging stations are more common than others, but most big cities across the U.S. have charging stations to accommodate all different types of vehicles. These charging stations include:
Tesla - A level 2 charging station made specifically for Tesla vehicles that can be found all over the country.
CHAdeMO - A level 3 charging station that works with Asian-made vehicles and Teslas with adaptors. This is the fastest charger on the market, taking only 20 minutes to an hour!
NEMA-14-50 - A level 2 charging station that all vehicles can use with an adapter.
Tesla Supercharger - A level 3 charging station that is the same as the regular Tesla station, but charges more quickly.
CCS/SAE - A level 3 charging station that works with most U.S.-made vehicles.
Tesla Roadster - Made for a specific Tesla model.
