Effective Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency in Your Factory

You usually can’t build something without breaking a sweat, and that’s why the manufacturing sector consumes more power than most other industries. According to the US Energy Information Administration, in 2019 manufacturing accounted for 32% of total energy consumption in the country. Heavy equipment and complex systems require a lot of juice to keep products moving along the supply chain. However, that doesn’t mean all of what’s used is necessary, and there are numerous ways that factories can reduce their energy use and improve the efficiency in their day-to-day operations.

Increasing energy efficiency is a worthwhile endeavor for any production facility for many reasons. In addition to reducing reliance on natural resources and the amount of pollution generated, boosting factory efficiency helps manufacturers reduce their operating costs and increase profitability. Making improvements to operations should be a regular endeavor for any producer. While some of these improvements will require substantial financial outlay, others are relatively simple and cheap, or even free.

There are numerous steps factory operators can take to streamline their processes in the big picture as well as at the micro-level. For example, air compressors can be some of the largest consumers of power in these facilities. With a few adjustments, air compressors can operate at peak pressure only when it is required. Fixing leaks and preventing new ones from occurring are also good ways to improve the efficiency of your piping system. Although this will likely require the help of a third party, it will save you money, since a quarter-inch air leak at 100 psi could incur more than $2,500 a year in unnecessary costs.

Creating a workplace culture that values energy conservation also encourages employees at all levels to be aware of how their actions impact the company. Something as simple as replacing older light fixtures with LEDs and putting them on a timer can also make a big difference. For even more tips, see the infographic below.
